The annual Beem Credit Union Unplug and Play Family Literacy Week is back! The event takes place January 24–31, 2026, in support of Family Literacy Day on January 27th!

Literacy in Kamloops along with community partners, are working hard to encourage families to find a healthy balance between sedentary screen time and active family time,  unplugging from their devices and connecting more with each other. Spending time together as a family strengthens relationships and supports a lifelong literacy journey. Families are encouraged to spend at least 15 minutes a day doing an activity together that builds literacy skills. And it’s more than just reading together, activities could include cooking and baking, playing board games, building or creating something or learning a new skill.

Each year close to 9,000 students have participated annually in the Beem Credit Union Unplug and Play Student Challenge. Students pledge to reduce their screen time and reflect on their experiences. The student participants continue to express their enjoyment over spending more time with family and friends and discovering new screen-free activities.

The Beem Credit Union Unplug and Play Family Literacy Week schedule of free events offers many opportunities to build literacy skills while balancing screen time. The week begins with our kick off event, the annual ABC Family Literacy Day at the John Tod Centre Kamloops Y, a fun-filled morning of activities geared to families with children aged 5 and under. Other events include the annual Family Magic Show; Learn, Sing, and Play the Métis Way with the Lii Michif Otipemisiwak family and community services centre; Taiko Drumming with Kamloops Japanese Canadian Association; and Youth Board Game Cafe at BGC Kamloops.

The Schedule of Events will be available HERE on Wednesday January 14th or at the Kamloops Unplug and Play Facebook page. You can also pick up a schedule at any of our partner organizations and the Beem Credit Union loc ation in Kamloops.
