Children’s Literacy Programs
These programs aim to build a strong foundation of literacy skills, increase reading confidence and fluency, and foster a love of literacy and learning from an early age.
Come Read With Me Volunteer Tutoring
Formerly titled ONE TO ONE. We train volunteers in simple reading strategies so they can help children who are struggling with some aspect of their reading. Volunteer tutors read with 3 students for 30 minutes each at a local elementary school once a week during school hours for 12 weeks. This one-on-one time with a caring, patient adult builds students’ self-confidence, improves their reading fluency and comprehension and builds independence.

Reading Club @ BGC Kamloops
This program is funded by Decoda Literacy Solutions. Teen tutors are trained to work one-on-one with students who are in the BGC after-school program and who would benefit from individual reading support. The goal of the program is to build reading confidence and fluency, increase comprehension and decoding skills and foster a love of reading. The students read twice a week for 30 minutes each for 6 months.
Bright Red Book Bus
The Bright Red Book Bus (BRBB) is an outdoor program that visits local schools and parks in July and August, offering drop-in access to free books. Children are encouraged to choose one book to keep. The purpose of the BRBB is to increase access to books over the summer and to promote joyful, lifelong reading.

Bright Red Bookshelves
We have 25 bookshelves in community and school locations stocked with FREE books. Children can take books home, keep them, return them, or trade them for new books. Reading books and owning books are important for building a child’s reading skills and vocabulary, as well as encouraging an interest in reading and a love of books.
Program Objectives are to:
- Promote a love of reading
- Put books in the hands of children
- Increase book ownership by families
- Circulate new or gently-used children’s books in the community
- Involve community members in literacy efforts through book donation and site stewardship
- Enhance the services of host organizations by providing free books for the families they serve
